MY ENEMY

My Enemy is Silence
I am never free from It's touch
When I get home, It is waiting
When I open my door It pounces
Not with rending claws and fangs
But with an mocking emptiness
It cruelly jeers at my life
When I enter It hides in the shadows
Waiting for motion to cease
Then It creeps up behind me
And hits me with realization
The awareness of being alone
Loneliness is It's knife
Which It plunges in and twists
This Silence is cruel and cold
It is louder than cannon's blast
Or the sound of exploding bombs
Yet, It is empty and hollow
It is the Foe that assails me
Leaving me with dark thoughts
No matter how much noise is made
Either by CD or radio or TV
The Silence is still lurking nearby
Waiting, always waiting
I wrestle this Foe always
An Enemy that gnaws at my very bones
Biting and snapping at my hopes
Trying to shatter my dreams
With the vicious hammer of despair
This is my mortal Enemy
Cunning and cruel beyond belief
This is the war I fight every night
This empty house, my battleground
My Enemy is Silence

This is a poem I wrote a while back. I live alone out in the middle of nowhere, and this is the battle I fight ever night.

Hm. How's it go again:
"Take away a man's light, his clothes, his food, his friends, his air, and you leave him with nothing but himself. And for most that is not pleasant company.''

However, you are never truly alone. You always have your demons to keep you company.
